Nearly six months into the US war on Iran, the conflict has evolved into a prolonged confrontation that has strained American military resources, disrupted global energy markets and failed to produce the political outcome Washington had expected, according to a new report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The report says US President Donald Trump received repeated warnings from intelligence and military officials before ordering the February 28 assault, including assessments that killing Iran's leadership could strengthen harder-line forces, prompt Tehran to move more aggressively toward nuclear weapons and trigger retaliation against US forces and regional partners.

Days before the war began, Trump reportedly summoned then-Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to the Oval Office to ask whether a large-scale attack on Iran could succeed.
