SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A state appeals court has ruled that the ban on assault weapons like the AR-15 will remain in place. The ban has been in place since 1989. The ruling was filed late last week and is the first decision made since the U.S. Supreme Court limited California’s ability to regulate firearms.

OTTAWA, Canada -- The Canadian government is proposing a ban on assault-style firearms that would apply once legislation now before Parliament comes into force.

A federal lawsuit notes that the new law draws arbitrary distinctions and targets guns in common use for legal purposes.

The Washington state senate on Saturday approved a measure that would ban the sale of so-called "assault weapons." It does not, however, ban possession.
