LONDON — Britain's two-year exit process from the European Union began Wednesday when Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50.

The UK's permanent representative to the EU, Tim Barrow, handed a six-page letter signed by May to the European Council's president, Donald Tusk, just after 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday, formally requesting Britain's exit from the union.

Once the letter was received by Tusk, Article 50 was officially triggered.
